‘Can Netflix’s Vegan Documentaries Convince Me To Quit Meat?’

For Refinery 29, Jazmin Kopotsha writes honestly about the experience of a carnivore watching vegan documentaries:

I’m embarrassed to say that my stumbling upon [Cowspiracy] and guilting myself into watching it more than five years after the rest of the world is an accurate (and disappointing) metaphor for my approach to veganism. I know it’ll make a big difference to the planet. I know there are both health and sustainability benefits. But like many of us with memories rooted in the smell of roast turkey for Christmas dinner, burned burgers on the barbecue over summer and late night McNuggets/KFC/kebabs, I’m reluctant (and lazy) to make such a huge change to a part of my lifestyle that I really enjoy. There. I said it. I’m sorry.

The whole piece offers an interesting perspective on some of the vegan-focused documentaries on Netflix.

I don’t think anything has been better for veganism than the combination of documentaries and Netflix. I bet it has inspired more people to try vegan food than anything that has ever come before.

‘Anthony Bourdain Doc in the Works From CNN, ’20 Feet From Stardom’ Director’

A feature documentary about the late television star and chef Anthony Bourdain is in the works from Focus Features, CNN Films and HBO Max, to be directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville.

[…]

“Anthony Bourdain did more to help us understand each other than just about anyone in the history of television. He connected with people not in spite of his flaws, but because of them. To have the opportunity to tell his story is humbling. CNN is in the DNA of Tony’s work, and the perfect partners in this journey. I’m thrilled to be reteaming with Focus Features after our journey on Won’t You Be My Neighbor?.”

I’m really looking forward to this, and Morgan Neville is one of my favorite documentary filmmakers. This is good news.

The Game Changers Trailer

Over the last decade or two, I don’t think anything has been more important to veganism than documentaries. Today marks the release of a new one called The Game Changers. This is how they’re talking about it on their website:

Directed by Oscar®-winning documentary filmmaker Louie Psihoyos and executive produced by James Cameron, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jackie Chan, Lewis Hamilton, Novak Djokovic, and Chris Paul, The Game Changers tells the story of James Wilks — elite Special Forces trainer and The Ultimate Fighter winner — as he travels the world on a quest to uncover the optimal diet for human performance.

Showcasing elite athletes, special ops soldiers, visionary scientists, cultural icons, and everyday heroes, what James discovers permanently changes his understanding of food and his definition of true strength.

Whenever I meet folks new to veganism, they usually talk about how documentaries like Forks Over Knives, Food, Inc., and Earthlings changed their perspective. I think The Game Changers is a new category of film that we’d been missing, especially of this caliber, with world-class athletes talking about the benefits they’ve seen in their bodies and lives. I haven’t seen it yet, but I’m interested. When this thing hits Netflix, its effects are going to be massive — especially within the crowd of people who think veganism means sacrificing strength.
