‘Impossible Dumplings and Beyond Buns: Will China Buy Fake Meat?’

David Yaffe-Bellany for the NYTimes:

Mr. Brown also said he had met with government officials and business leaders to discuss the regulatory process, though he declined to name them.

One argument Mr. Brown has been making is that a thriving plant-based meat industry would help the Chinese government reduce its reliance on imports. Over the last year and a half, an epidemic of African swine fever has decimated the country’s pork supply, forcing the government to turn to foreign markets to satisfy demand.

“They’re desperately looking for protein of all kinds to supplement that market,” said Derrell Peel, an agricultural economist at Oklahoma State University. “That might make it easier to get some of this through.”

China as a market is nothing like America, and it will be interesting to see if not only if the government will allow them to play but if the people will be interested.

‘How to Eat Less Meat Without Losing Your Mind’

Marie Franklin writes some nice advice for people trying to eat less meat, and many of her tips are often what I tell folks who ask me a similar question:

1. Don’t think about it as all or nothing.

2. Start small (and easy)

3. Find something meatless that you can genuinely enjoy as a main dish […]

5. Try a meat substitute (yes, I’m serious)

6. Don’t care so much about what other people think

I first advice is usually start small. One meal a week. If that goes well, the following week do two meals. And onward.

Converting meals to vegan is usually fairly easy. There are pretty good replacements, but it’s all about knowing what replacement to use.

Many products work as 1:1 replacements in recipes, and, if they don’t, most answers are a simple web search away.

‘McDonald’s Misses Profit Target as Competition Delivers Breakfast, Plant Burgers’

McDonald’s Corp missed Wall Street estimates for profit for the first time in two years on Tuesday as more investment to spruce up U.S. restaurants and speed up service weighed on the world’s biggest fast food chain, sending its shares down 4%.

Rival fast-food chains in the United States have challenged its dominance with value meals and new menu items, including plant-based burgers and meat substitutes launched by rivals including Restaurant Brands International Inc’s Burger King and Yum Brands Inc’s KFC.

Calling it: T-minus 6 months before we see the first vegan sandwich at Mickey D’s.

‘Veggie-First Eating, and Thinking’

Alexandra Weiss for the NYTimes:

Veggie Mijas is a collective of over 300 nonbinary, female-identifying people and women of color in 12 chapters across the United States, and the group — originally founded by Amy Quichiz and Mariah Bermeo — facilitates community building through vegan potlucks, cleaning up community gardens and hosting youth seminars to teach children about the importance of growing their own food.

“Veggie Mijas is about reclaiming what a plant-based lifestyle looks like, which isn’t just about not eating meat,” said Ms. Quichiz, 24, a native of Queens, N.Y., who is Peruvian and Colombian. “It’s about what we can do for our communities, and about reflecting on the systems around us that impact the choices that we make.”

I’ve written about Veggie Mijas before, but I wanted to post this larger and longer story. This has some nice tips for new vegans from queer and people-of-color communities.
